Macerata

Macerata is one of the Marchigian provinces, stands on a hill 314 meters in height between the Potenza and Chienti’s valleys and is known worldwide for its annual festival of Lyric Opera, which takes place in one of the most representative place of the city: the Arena Sferisterio, an amphitheater of neoclassical architecture designed by Irenaeus Aleandri. Macerata is also an important university town, one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1290.

Among the attractions to visit it should be noted Buonaccorsi Palace, home of the Carriage Museum (Museo della Carrozza) and a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Unification of Italy and the resistance during the war. The Palazzo Comunale overlooking the central Piazza della Libertà where are the Loggia dei Mercanti and Torre Civica, 64 meters high, where you can enjoy a wonderful view. Then there is the Teatro Lauro Rossi and Palazzo Ricci, where you can visit a collection of Italian art of the twentieth century. Among the religious monuments we can remember the Chiesa di San Paolo (St. Paul’s Church) and the Cathedral, designed by Cosimo Morelli, the nearby Basilica della Misericordia completely restored by Luigi Vanvitelli in 1742; the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Vergini (Church of St. Mary of the Virgin) where you can see a “Epifania” by Tintoretto.
