Ancona

Ancona is the capital of the Marches, develops on the promontory of Monte Conero and directly overlooking the sea. The city was founded by Greek colonists, and developed in Roman times. The Romans exploited the expansion of the harbour, strategically very important for the traffic of goods in the Adriatic. The historic city center is developed on Mount Guasco, the hill above the port. At the highest point of the mountain there is the most representative monument of the city, the medieval Cathedral of San Ciriaco, a splendid Romanesque-Gothic characteristic church for the marble facade, the arches and the symbolic figures carved around the portal.
Among the places to visit should be noted the Museo Archeologico Nazionale delle Marche which preserves artifacts dating back to the Iron Age and documents the prehistory of the ancient civilizations who populated the Adriatic coast. The church of Santa Maria della Piazza, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, the Arco di Traiano, built in 115 by Apollodoro from Damascus; and the Mole Vanvitelliana, a military construction pentagonal built within the port and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli in the 18th century. Do not miss a visit to the Municipal Art Gallery (Pinacoteca Comunale) where you can see major works by artists such as Carlo Crivelli, Tiziano, Lorenzo Lotto and Guercino. The city has several rocky and sandy beaches. There are: the Passetto, a beach with large white rocks, including the Seggiola of the Papa , the rock of the Square and the beach Mezzavalle. The most famous beach south of Ancona is Portonovo where alternating sand and pebble beaches .In the north of the city lies the sandy beach of Palombina.
